JINGLE BELL ROCK: TOP TEN FESTIVE FLOOR-FILLERS
AS VOTED FOR BY MOBILE DJS
It’s hard to say exactly what makes a Christmas song great, which is why we entrusted the people who know pop music better than anyone – our readers – to compile the list to end all lists. Yes, that’s right. We’ve counted your votes for the Top Ten Festive Floor-fillers. The results are in! And as you’d expect, the chart contains some absolute Christmas crackers, alongside some slightly less likely candidates…
Merry Xmas Everybody
Slade
A Christmas-time dance-floor favourite, 'Merry Xmas Everybody' became Slade's biggest hit after making Christmas number one in 1973. Based on an idea inspired by The Beatles back in 1969, it was reworked into a Christmas song after bassist and co-writer Jim Lea penned the line “Are you hanging up your stocking on the wall?” Noddy Holder’s down-to-earth lyrics, this time detailing a regular British Christmas spent “waiting for the family to arrive,” made the song popular with the masses, while hard-rock guitar riffs and Lea’s walking bass line supplied plenty of hooks. One of the nation’s favourites – and taking second position on our top ten – the popularity of this bona fide classic shows no signs of waning, and it’s a must-must-play for any festive get-together! Does your granny always tell you that the old songs are the best? In the case of this classic Christmas cracker, she’s probably not wrong…
