JINGLE BELL ROCK: TOP TEN FESTIVE FLOOR-FILLERS
AS VOTED FOR BY MOBILE DJS
It’s hard to say exactly what makes a Christmas song great, which is why we entrusted the people who know pop music better than anyone – our readers – to compile the list to end all lists. Yes, that’s right. We’ve counted your votes for the Top Ten Festive Floor-fillers. The results are in! And as you’d expect, the chart contains some absolute Christmas crackers, alongside some slightly less likely candidates…
Fairytale of New York
The Pogues
Showcasing a perfect vocal duet from lead singer Shane MacGowan and Kirsty MacColl, this timeless track from London-based Celtic-punk band The Pogues was released in 1987. Despite failing to reach UK number one, the bittersweet tale of two bickering Broadway stars has since been voted as the best Christmas song in a number of polls, but takes third place in the Pro Mobile Top Ten! A floor-filler for a different reason to the other songs on the list, ‘Fairytale of New York’ comes into its own when friends are arm-in-arm on the dance-floor swaying to the string melodies and reciting the lyrics. With that in mind, this bleak but endearing track might be the last song you play (and punters hear) this Christmas Eve, with drunken copycat renditions likely to be heard in the streets as revellers stumble home for a few hours’ kip.
