This tale of a past Christmas filled with heartbreak and lost love was a huge hit for 80s pop band Wham!, with George Michael laying on the hooks for this seasonal favourite. An understated but danceable synth-pop track, ‘Last Christmas’ is backed by a constant beat, while tinkering keyboards add to the emotional atmosphere as Michael recalls the failed romance of ‘last Christmas’. Though it was a big hit, the song was in fact beaten to the top spot by Band Aid, which also featured Michael. Wham! decided to donate all the royalties from the song to the same Ethiopian famine appeal as Band Aid, with the group giving the most out of all the artists involved. A call to all those lonely hearts this Christmas, this slow burner is bound to draw singles to the dance-floor in their masses!
