And just like that, it’s 2024! On behalf of all at Pro Mobile and HH Publishing, I’d like to wish all of our writers, readers and advertisers, a happy and prosperous new year. Last year was a big step in the right direction, something of a return to normality. The huge issues with equipment supply eased and whilst Covid didn’t go away, it wasn’t the headline-driving pandemic that it still was in 2022. And that absolutely crazy backlog has finally eased.

My DJ journey began in 1982. Fresh out of sixth-form college at 17 years old, I started my music collection. I loved the underground house music coming out of America with its dark groovy element. The electro dance music from Brooklyn and the Bronx had an exciting sound and great stories behind the lyrics.

In a few months’ time I’ll be tying the knot with my partner of 11 years. Other DJs, who might not even be as good as you, are stealing your clients from right under your nose. At least, that’s what many of us tell ourselves. But are they actually? In a world where everyone is struggling to make a living, is it really fair to say that other DJs are ‘stealing’ all the work away from you? Maintaining such a mindset can significantly impede you as a business owner, because the reality is very different.

I’ve been asked many times how I started my career as a professional DJ, but the question of why I stopped is one that rarely comes up in conversation. I don’t tell the story too often but thought the time was right to share it in Pro Mobile, as I’m sure many of you will be able to relate with similar experiences of your own.

In 2023 there was one huge talking point in tech: AI. Artificial intelligence has been with us for some time, affecting our lives in ways many of us are unaware of. Last year in Pro Mobile, I covered some of the ways you can use AI in your digital marketing right now, whilst Tony Winyard explored its ‘big picture’ potential for the future.

Visitors to ‘BPM – the Show for DJs’ in October of last year were treated to a rare and bespoke set by one half of the Video Geeks, Kel Sweeney. Rare, because along with his video jock partner Ben Adams (Ben Jammin), Kel is usually only seen doing video work at big festivals and bespoke events as he created his set especially for a DJ audience. Pro Mobile’s editor, Peter Holding, caught up with Kel to find out more about how he went from DJing as a student to festival DJ.

Designed to bring together the mobile DJ industry within the UK and Ireland to acknowledge and celebrate excellence, the Awards are voted for by you – Pro Mobile’s readers – and will be presented at this year’s Pro Mobile Focus & Retreat.
