A respected DJ struck down by illness has cited his passion for creativity, and a little help from audio brand FBT, as being vital to his recovery. International DJ and industry consultant Brian S. Redd feared his career was over after he suffered a stroke in 2011, but found that by adapting his rig he could keep on doing what he does best DJing!

US-based DJ Brian Redd (aged 39) lost the use of his right arm and leg following a stroke, upon which he believed his career in entertainment to be over. However, by displaying a positive attitude, and exceptional determination and creativity, he was able to build a streamlined system that he could still carry and set up himself, allowing him to continue on his work as a professional DJ.

After searching for answers from the DJ community, but struggling to come up with a coherent solution, Brian decided that he needed a lightweight rig that didnt forsake sound quality. In order to make this a reality, he not only had to use a few clever tricks but also incorporate the right equipment into his setup, the key components of which included a set of FBT ProMaxX speakers.

“I had to work it out you know, all of the logistics,” said Brian. “The simplest things were a challenge: how to pole a speaker, how to carry it, how to load a truck and get into a venue. There were weight issues and I wasn’t willing to compromise on good quality or sound, so in the end there was a lot of trial and error.”

The veteran DJ even needed to figure out how to wind cables with one hand instead of two, eventually opting for self-reeling mic and power cables. One of the biggest challenges, however, was finding speakers that were light enough for to carry but still capable of delivering quality sound. So, after talking with several UK-based DJs, and John Krupa of Italian Speaker Imports in the USA, Brian decided FBT was the brand he best-suited to his needs.

“There’s just no other brand that was going to give me the sound that I wanted, or the quality, within the weight limitations I have to work with,” said Brian. “The thing about FBT is that they don’t compromise on quality, so it’s a winner. Right now [the ProMaxX] is looked at as a boutique item; it’s not something you can get at any big box retailer, so I consider myself lucky. Because of the balance and leverage it’s super easy for me to handle, meanwhile I get massive power with a relatively small box. My system has a unique sound that no one else in town has.”

Since setting up his first system, Brian has become stronger, stepping his 8” speakers up to the 10” FBT ProMaxX 10, which he says has doubled his sound while only adding an additional three pounds. This small increase in weight means that Brian can still move his audio setup in and out of venues, while enjoying all the benefits of a bigger sound and continuing develop his physical strength too.

“When I was laying there in the hospital years ago, I had to be strong. There wasn’t any choice about whether or not I was going to go back to work; I had to do what I do best,” he explained. “As I started to recuperate, I met a few people that had it much worse than me […] who were still working as DJs. If they can do it, if they can work, there shouldn’t be any reason why I can’t figure this out. Being a DJ is the most rewarding thing I can do, financially and spiritually – it’s what I’m best at. And I think that’s what everyone should do – whatever that is for them.”
