IN THIS ISSUE
I’ll begin my story by telling you about a DJ I once knew. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica before moving to the UK. He grew up in the West Midlands and after leaving school embarked on a career as a DJ. He played at venues up and down the country and across Europe before moving to Belgium, aged 22, to play at the legendary Funk You club in Antwerp.

BPM has been through some changes over the last three years or so. To begin with, its original owners – Marked Events – ceased to exist, putting the future of the show in jeopardy. Then, there’s been that slightly problematic thing called a global pandemic to contend with.

As the Wham! song goes, "Last Christmas" – oh yes! We didn’t really have Christmas last year, did we? Not in the usual sense, anyway. With a near two-year gap since our last properly busy December and with this being his 14th year of DJing festive bashes, we asked Toby Oakley how he prepares for the mad season of goodwill.

I was recently flicking through my old Pro Mobile copies and stumbled across an article by Editor Peter Holding which struck a chord with me. Pete mentioned the idea that we are on public display from the moment we arrive at a venue and therefore it's important we always make the right impression.

Did you know that Mastermix have been providing music solutions for DJs since 1986? The business was the brainchild of businessman John Pickles, who went on to build a family-run music company focused on the supply of mixed and unmixed content for professional DJs across Europe.

I wrote in Pro Mobile issue 107 about music management and covered the basics of organising your music in a structured way, ensuring that you have quick and easy access to that next great track at any party.

I believe that the people who are achieving great things today don’t necessarily have more money or more ideas than the rest of us. They just act on their ideas. The people not taking actions are often hampered by the fear of failure (or even the fear of success). Successful people accept that failure is a possibility and react to each failure as a learning opportunity; a speed bump, not a roadblock.

Each respective home nation had to deal with some sort of pain brought about by Euro 2020. England for being tantalisingly close to claiming the title Champions of Europe, Wales for not being able to do anything with the good fortune they were dished out, Northern Ireland for missing the whole thing and Scotland for not getting out of the group stages (but at least taking a point from England).

It’s easy to see why artists reach for the Christmas hit. That hallowed ground that could potentially set them up for life. It’s reported that Slade’s ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ – one of the most-heard songs ever, according to PRS – makes Noddy Holder over £500,000 each year, with a portion of royalties also going to co-writer Jim Lea (Slade’s bass player).

You may have heard the legendary story that rocker David Lee Roth insisted that Van Halen’s contracts with concert promoters contain a clause specifying that a bowl of M&Ms has to be provided backstage, but with every single brown candy removed?

I’m the first to admit that I’m a bit of an event junkie. This all started in my late teens; once I’d passed my driving test the world of large-scale events was my oyster! My first was a car show at the NEC in Birmingham, whose massive halls have gone on to be as familiar to me as any place I visit regularly.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and even though we’ve all played Slade’s festive classic far too many times, there is something warming about hearing Noddy Holder scream out “It’s Christmas!” As the festive party season draws closer, DJs will be preparing their Christmas and New Year music libraries.
