Given the challenges thrown at the new organisers – BPM Shows Ltd – over the past 18 months, including postponing the 2020 instalment, it was a moment of sheer delight to see the doors open on BPM 2021 last month. BPM Shows has done a fantastic job to get the show back on its feet, refocussing BPM on the original, core audience that it appealed to when the show launched back 2007 – the DJ market, including mobile, club and bedroom DJs.

This year saw around 2000 attendees return to Cranmore Park, Solihull (the show’s new home since 2019) for a much-anticipated weekend of new products, live DJ sets, networking opportunities, professional development, and no doubt the odd Sunday morning hangover too. The brilliant Saturday night after party featured DJs behind the decks until the early hours, including Louis Smyth, DJ Kuta and KISS radio's Justin Wilkes .
The chance to catch up with old friends, make new connections and generally just be around like-minded people was music to the ears of a very tightly knit industry that has definitely missed its exhibitions and trade events. So, let’s take a deeper dive into what went down.

On the show floor

Across the weekend there were plenty of brands for visitors to check out, whether searching for new lighting and audio products or seeking out new ways to enhance and expand their businesses. Out on the show floor, mobile DJs got busy previewing the latest lighting and FX products from the likes of ADJ, Chauvet DJ, Abstract, Magic FX, TLS Lighting, Monacor, and many more.

Both on its stand and over in the Sound Experience, FBT were pushing their newly designed X-Series speakers, which offer increased power handling and Bluetooth 5.0 functionality for streaming from smart devices. Meanwhile, BishopSound showcased both old favourites – such as the Alpha Twin 15” and Orion series – and exciting new developments like the as-yet-unreleased BDB8, a single 8” box with an intense SPL and ecofriendly plywood design. Over on ADJ ‘s sleek stand, the brand’s iOS-compatible 4-universe DMX controller – the ADJ Link – seemed to go down very well indeed, while its Avante speakers were also on display.
In terms of getting hands on with the latest gear, it was great to see DJs young and old trying out the new Reloop Ready and Reloop Buddy controllers for Serato and djay. Reloop also showcased its Elite series for Serato, including the RP-8000 MK2 hybrid turntable and Elite performance mixer.

Elsewhere, Selfie Wizard, Speed Quizzing and Red Tooth Quizzing got plenty of attention for their DJ and host-specific solutions. Mastermix, Promo Only, CD Pool and I Like Music covered the music service side of things. Whilst storage and transport solutions were offered up by Magma, Swan Flight and Flightcase Warehouse, all with new products designed to help DJs who are now, thankfully, back out on the road doing what they do best.
