The Twist
Chubby Checker
Kicking off the top ten is this classic slice of rock ‘n’ roll from Chubby Checker, a favourite with audiences both in the UK and across the Atlantic. One of three tracks in our top twenty to feature the word ‘twist’ in its title, this 1960 cover is the song that popularised the dance move of the same name. The Twist was a new dance for young music fans that was vastly different to the ‘boring’ waltzes of their parents’ time. Featuring honking sax solos, prominent doo-wop-style backing vocals, and, of course, the lyrical hook “do the twist”, this early-sixties hit set the pace for the decade ahead and is still guaranteed to get guests grooving!
