Mick Jagger and the late David Bowie may have covered it, but rock royalty can’t beat this incredible original by Martha & the Vandellas. Harnessing the signature groove of Motown, this legendary soul track was transformed from a ballad into a danceable floor-filler at the say-so of Marvin Gaye. Inspired by seeing people cooling off beneath broken fire hydrants during the hot Detroit summer, the track became an anthem for the civil rights movement and was often played during street protests, resulting in a no-play policy on some radio stations. The song’s awesome pop power won in the end, though: Martha & the Vandellas took ‘Dancing In The Street’ to number two in the US charts... and number six in our Top Ten Sixties Floor-fillers!
