The DJ Playlist: Funky House
Mobile DJs could be described as the chameleons of the DJ world. In the same way that the reptile can change its colour to match its surroundings so a mobile DJ can change their music choices and adapt to each event accordingly to ensure the perfect soundtrack is achieved.

I admire DJs of all types, of course, but I have a special appreciation for good mobile DJs and feel they deserve a lot more credit than they perhaps receive, especially when it comes to the music they play. As mobile DJs we are expected to be able to play many types of music, from every decade, and continually update our knowledge as music trends come and go. Never underestimate the job you do and how your music expertise is a valuable asset to have.

I'm always searching through my music library and recently started listening to some new funky house tracks, both for mixes I've been working on for Mastermix and for me personally as a DJ. There are some great tracks out there but, as with most new music, they are very disposable and often disappear after only a short time in favour. It prompted me to do some crate-digging to revisit some classic funky house and I found myself on a music trip that brought back some amazing tracks, forgotten hits and a whole host of memories. I love how music does that. It takes you to places, rekindles memories, evokes imagination and inspires you, which in turn you can pass on to your audiences.

I like to have a mix of tracks from any genre I'm playing, so I can include a selection of big hits alongside club anthems and rare tracks that allow me to create innovative sets for my clients, and funky house is no exception. There are some amazing tracks like 'Make Luv' – Room 5 feat. Oliver Cheetham, 'Shiny Disco Balls'- Who Da Funk feat. Jessica Eve and 'Love On My Mind' – Freemasons feat. Amanda Wilson that did the job then and still does the job now! Building a funky house set using tracks like these as a base allows you to be creative without alienating a mainstream audience. Once you have their trust then you can add to these tracks to take your audience on a musical journey whist remembering your mobile DJ roots. Artists including Armand Van Helden, Basement Jaxx, Junior Jack and Lee-Cabrera have all recorded funky house tracks that have stood the test of time. If you want to push things further you can really go to town adding a few specialist tracks into the mix like 'Happy Days' – PJ, 'My Life' – Chanel and 'Be Free' – Live Element. It’s down to your skill as a DJ to read your audience, play the music that works and occasionally push the boundaries whilst remaining in control of the dancefloor.

Funky house uses disco and funk samples and is heavily-influenced by these types of track, mainly from the ‘70s and ‘80s. There is a specific sound and production technique associated with funky house and the feel-good, bouncy tempo make it both easy on the ear and enjoyable on the dancefloor. Mixing new music with classic tracks, like funky house, can create some incredible sets. I've taken the time to revisit this style of music and this might be a good time for you to do the same.
