CHAUVET DJ Creates Special Rig for Lighting Tech of the Year Finale!
Recognising excellence in the lighting industry, the Luminar Groups Lighting Technician of the Year competition is a chance for lighting designers from across the UK to prove their worth and be rewarded for their talents. This year, Luminar called on CHAUVET DJ and its sister company TRUSST to provide the lighting and trussing for the competitions final event.

Hosted by Luminars Al Mayfield at the Oceana venue in Southampton, the finals were split into two sections. Firstly, the five regional winners had to program and operate a lighting rig to a pre-recorded musical sequence; secondly, they were tasked with operating the same rig during a 15-minute slot in the main room of the club on a busy Saturday night.

CHAUVET DJ and TRUSST were responsible for creating this specially designed contest rig, which was constructed from truss (by TRUSST) and fitted with a combination of moving heads from CHAUVET DJs Intimidator series, including Intimidator Beam LED 350s, Intimidator Spot LED 350s and Intimidator Wash Zoom 350 IRCs. Some powerful MegaStrobe FX12 strobe lights were also used; as well as a set of COLORband Pix-M linear fixtures, which use DMX-controllable motors to create sweeping effects. CHAUVET DJ also included Geyser RGB fog blasters and a Funfetti Shot confetti cannon, combining streams of illuminated fog with confetti shots for some explosive end results.

After each finalist had operated the CHAUVET DJ rig to complete both tasks, it was up to a panel of four judges to pick the winner!

I was very impressed with the calibre of all the finalists. It was exciting to see them put their ideas together so quickly and professionally, said judge Steve Fisher, Managing Director of SF Leisure Europe Ltd. The second challenge provided them with an opportunity to really showcase their creative flair.

The overall competition winner was the South West finalist, Ian Burridge, who is the lighting designer at Oceana nightclub in Plymouth. Luminars Ged Gorrie (Regional Director South) and Tim Howard (Head of Marketing and Central Operations) presented Ian with a stylish glass award for Lighting Technician of the Year. His prize also included a CHAUVET DJ Geyser RGB and a trip to Prolight + Sound 2015 in Frankfurt, Germany, where he was responsible for operating the lighting at the opening party.
