DJs From Across Scotland Gather To Learn and Network
May the 4th (no Star Wars puns please!) saw the third of this year’s bi-monthly WSDJAMP meets take place at the Glencairn Venue, in Rutherglen, Glasgow. Attracting DJs from across Scotland, the event featured education, gear demonstrations and networking.

The West of Scotland DJ Amp meets are organised by myself, David Mitchell, along with Tony Rimkus of RS Sound & Light and, founder of the meetings, Hugh McGuiness. As the name suggests, the meets are heavily supported by AmpDJ, as well as various brands from the sound and lighting industry.

This meet was well attended with 53 DJs of all backgrounds and from all areas of Scotland, getting together on a wet Wednesday to talk about all the things that our other halves really have no interest in – other than the cost! A special mention must go to David Wells who made the long trip up from Dumfries and of course to the Fifers who made the long trip from the North East.

These meets are all about ‘raising the bar’ and, following my trip to February’s Pro Mobile Conference, I realised what a game changer it could be for others. Therefore, as a group, we have decided to sponsor someone to attend next year’s Conference. The successful DJ will also receive a 1-year subscription to Pro Mobile magazine as well as a 1-year membership of AmpDJ.

The agenda for the meet saw a packed few hours of talks and demos. The night was started with an introduction from myself, including an update on what’s new at AmpDJ and a reminder about our ‘Pro Mobile Conference’ sponsorship plans. The mic was then passed around everyone in the room for a brief introduction so that we could all put names to faces. We then kicked things off with an icebreaker interactive music quiz consisting of ‘MTV’ and ‘Don’t Forget The Lyrics’ Rounds.

Up next was Andrew Wylie, long term veteran of the mobile disco scene, owner of Straightshooter Discos in Glenrothes (a Fifer!) and author of two DJ books based around games and interaction at events: ‘Disco Games’ and ‘Promotional Fun & Games’. I’m sure you will have guessed what his talk was on! Being interactive and able to get guests involved is an essential skill for any DJ, regardless of the type of DJing we specialise in, and everyone in the room certainly learned a few tricks from Andrew.

Then it was over to Ian Webster of ADJ UK to demo all the new toys released this year such as the Ninja 5RX, Vizi Beam RXONE, Pocket Spot LZR and Ikon Profile – all controlled via ADJ’s new Airstream app, which is definitely the future for easy DMX controlling without the time consuming wiring.
We then broke out for the networking buffet. This break not only gave the attendees time to try out ADJ’s new toys, but also to witness David Lindsay of All Stars Entertainments host a Denon Vs Pioneer contest. David pitted his own Pioneer XDJ-RX against the all new Denon MCX8000, just released that week (supplied by Glasgow Sound Centre).

After the break our own Stuart MacLennan of Subsafe Audio gave us a run through of the Subsafe range and a look at the new non-customisable generic version which will come in at a more pocket friendly price. Then it was over to Bob Webster from Edinburgh to run through his rig which he brought along to the meet.

The evening concluded with our raffle containing a selection of great prizes including Subsafes, Haze Machines and a selection of DJ-related prizes from RS Sound & Light, as well as the usual drink and food prizes.

Our next meet is planned for the 6th of July at the same venue. If you’re a DJ based in Scotland, we’d love to have you join us at what promises to be another great night.
