Vinyl Revival Continues with Sales Up for 2015
Those DJs and music fans dubious about the return of vinyl have been left in little doubt of the format’s revival this week, as vinyl purchases soar and high-street music retailer HMV reports sales of one turntable-per-minute in the week prior to Christmas.

The news comes as Technics launches a new version of its popular SL-1200 turntable, bringing the debate over the return of vinyl to the forefront of the DJ community. The announcement by HMV was followed by a prediction that vinyl sales would reach two million in 2016, with the amount sold doubling since a notable resurgence in 2014 (reported on by Pro Mobile here).

“The soaring popularity of music streaming and the burgeoning vinyl revival mean that UK music consumption rose again in 2015,” said Geoff Taylor, Chief Executive for BPI, which has released industry figures for 2015. “Services such as Spotify and Apple Music are going mainstream […] Millions of fans also continue to build treasured collections of favourite albums on vinyl, CD or download.”

He added that “it’s UK artists who are driving this growth and inspiring the fans – at home and across the planet – with their award-winning song-writing and performances, whether it’s global icons such as Adele, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and One Direction, or recent British breakthroughs and newcomers like Jess Glynne, Little Mix and James Bay.”

On the Official Charts Company’s list of biggest-selling vinyl albums for 2015, Adele took the number-one spot with ‘25’, while other Top 40 favourites included Arctic Monkeys’ ‘AM’, ‘Music Complete’ by New Order, and classics like Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ and the Beatles’ ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’.

In addition to HMV finding success on the high street, online retailer Amazon reported that the Jensen JTA-230 three-speed turntable with built-in speakers was its best-selling home audio product during the Christmas period. This only reinforces claims that, despite the huge popularity of streaming, vinyl is an increasingly prominent format in the world of modern music. Expect the revival to continue in 2016...
