If you were a gas fitter, by law you would be forced to carry out formal training and register with Gas Safe (formally CORGI), the national governing body for gas fitters in the UK. There are similar bodies for many industries ranging from the Federation of Market Traders to the recently established government SIA scheme for security professionals. They each bring a professional element to their industry, often creating standard working practises, providing expert knowledge and support to members and offering opportunities for members to move forward in their profession.
As a DJ there are a number of organisations that you can belong to. Later in this article I will highlight the benefits of each different organisation so you can make the best decision for your own personal circumstances, but first let's ask the question 'why?'.
Why join an organisation?
It is a personal decision as to what association is going to be the best choice for your career or situation, but all should give you a sense of belonging and will add to consumer confidence if you market the fact you are a part of an organisation. All the organisations have various different benefits, often including public liability insurance (PLI). It is a sad fact that many DJs only join these organisations for PLI often ignoring, or not even realising, that they all offer far more than a simple insurance policy.
Our first insight is two associations featured regularly in Pro Mobile; NADJ (National Association of Disc Jockeys) and SEDA (South East DJ Association). Both are predominantly subscribed to by mobile DJs although both do welcome DJs of all styles and genres. There are a number of good reasons for joining either organisation but for me the one that stands out is the fact that in joining either NADJ or SEDA you will have a voice. In a way you can become quite a big fish in a relatively small pond. In joining you are actively encouraged to participate and take a hand's on role within the organisation. Both are committee led and in time you could find yourself chairing a meeting or two.
