The HDMIX is the latest step in Numark's progression of innovation in the field of digital DJing. It started with the Dē Director (since updated and re-released as the DDS), which allows DJs to play and manipulate digital music tracks held on USB storage devices. This principle was extended in the form of the iDJ2 to incorporate mixer controls into one compact package. Next came the DDS80, a new take on the traditional two-part DJ twin CD player. This currently unique product combines Numark's digital music control interface with an internal CD/DVD drive and a removable hard drive providing mobile DJs with an all-in-one system to play and store music that is also compatible with their existing collections of CDs and mp3 CD/DVDs. In creating the HDMIX Numark have taken every element of the DDS80 and combined them with a fully-featured DJ mixer in one tabletop unit to create a truly all-inclusive console for the modern mobile DJ.
Taking the same format as Numark's popular CDMIX series of combined mixer and twin CD player models, the HDMIX has a wedge shape that means the main control panel slopes to face the DJ. All of the file selection, playback and mixer controls are located on this main panel, while the audio CD/DVD drive and removable hard drive are positioned on the front, leaving the back panel for the various input and output connections.
At the heart of the CDMIX's control interface is a colour LCD screen, which provides current track information for the two decks and also an interface for searching the connected music collection(s). The screen is divided into three sections, with two smaller areas at the top left and right that always show the current track information for each deck and then a larger main area that changes depending on which of the four interface options has been selected. These options are 'library', 'crate', 'utility' and 'view'. Each option is selected by pressing its dedicated button located beside the screen and the relevant button is then illuminated to show which option is currently selected. A further set of buttons, positioned below the screen, allow menu selections to be made within each interface option.
