THE Magazine For Mobile DJs
LED Pars and the Mobile DJ
Many of you out there in Mobile DJ world have probably already seen some of the LED disco style fixtures that are now out on the market. I know that when some of them were first released they were selling out quicker than you could say their names!

Their effects are quick, fast and snappy; plus as they are lightweight and have no lamps to blow, they're a good choice for most mobile DJs. However, if you want an effect that's more subtle, smart and discreet, then something as simple as an LED Par Can has the potential to really work wonders giving a real wow factor to your show!

I've been DJing in the professional Wedding market for nearly 11 years. I'm based in Ipswich in Suffolk, which means I get to perform at many different prestigious hotels, marquees, barns and stately homes; and as a lot of you can imagine, the management at many of these venues are not massive lovers of smoke or haze machines!

It was around two years ago, that I first started looking at lighting effects to add to my arsenal that would cope with "smoke-less" venues. It was pretty obvious that a moonflower wasn't really going to cut the mustard, so I turned to my usual source of inspiration when it comes to the latest lighting effects - my good old trusty TV! It's Friday, 7:30pm, it's our old favourite - Top Of The Tops! (R.I.P. - Ed)

You've got to admit, the TV is a great way of seeing the latest flashy, and very expensive, equipment doing its thing and working in a live environment. Obviously some of the equipment being used isn't going to be applicable to the average mobile DJ, however it does give you an insight into the latest technology and will give you an idea of what some of the equipment entering the DJ marketplace will be like in a few years time. And of course, two years ago saw the introduction of LED fixtures to the professional lighting market.

After seeing a simple Par Can being used to up-light a backstage curtain, I took the idea and came across the LED Par can. I purchased a pair of LED Par 64s and I was blown away by what could be achieved with such a simple fixture. By floor mounting one (like on TOTP) I was able to create dramatic colour washes and highlight particular areas of a venue. It even occurred to me that a set of these new fixtures could even completely replace a conventional lighting system of Scans and Moonflowers etc.

Sold on the concept, I decided to make an investment and purchased 16 Chrome Par 64s as a complete up-lighting system.
