Girls Aloud Named Britain’s Biggest Selling Girl Group
Girls Aloud have been one of Britain’s favourite girl bands since they exploded onto the scene 10 years ago this week. The Official Charts Company have now certified this by revealing that they are the UK’s biggest selling girl group of the 21st Century.
From humble beginnings on Pop Idol back in 2002, Cheryl Cole, Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh have battled against the reality show stereotypes and come out on top. They have sold over 4.3 million singles and have scored 20 Top 10 hits (including four Official Number 1s).
The band’s biggest selling single, and also their first single after their Pop Idol win, is ‘Sound Of The Underground’ which has sold a whopping 653,000 copies in the UK. The track was also their fastest selling single and the Official Christmas Number 1 of 2002. ‘The Promise’ is their biggest selling download track which has sold 485,000 copies to date.
Martin Talbot, Managing Director of the Official Charts Company says: “With a staggering 20 Top 10 singles and four Number 1s, we’re delighted to officially crown Girls Aloud as the UK’s biggest selling girl group of the 21st Century. As the Official Charts Company gears up to celebrate 60 years of the Official Singles Chart next month, we give a huge congratulations to Nadine, Cheryl, Nicola, Sarah and Kimberley on their own 10 poptastic years in music!”
The band have recently announced the forthcoming release of their single, ‘Something New’, but have not given a definite date as of yet. Cheryl Cole has said in her autobiography that the band's upcoming Greatest Hits collection will be the last thing they do together, so if rumours of a tour are to be believed, fans better start camping for tickets!
