ITV, in collaboration with The Official Charts Company, has been running a poll to find out which number One single from the past 60 years is the nation’s favourite. Fearne Cotton presented the first of the 3 part series on Sunday the 8th of July and the winner will be announced during the final instalment on the 15th of July.
Episode one looked back at the birth of the singles chart, over six decades ago, before listing the contenders for the top spot.
A panel of music experts shortened the list of over 1000 to 60 and the public were able to choose their favourite from the group. There are some finalists that won’t come as a surprise to many viewers, such as ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen, ‘I Will Always Love You’ by Whitney Houston and ‘Hey Jude’ by the Beatles. The competition however might be a little shocking, with some songs only being released in the last few years, one such track is ‘Someone Like You’ by Adele.
