REVIEWED: Equinox Gigabar FX1
By Marcos Aranibar.
In the ever-evolving landscape of mobile entertainment, all-in-one bar lighting systems have become a staple for countless DJs, bands and performers. They offer the irresistible promise of a full light show in a single, convenient package, simplifying setup and teardown while delivering maximum visual impact.
While many lighting bars on the market follow a similar blueprint, every now and then a product comes along that genuinely pushes the envelope. Enter the Equinox Gigabar FX1, a piece of kit that confidently positions itself as a significant upgrade in the all-in-one lighting category.
When the Gigabar FX1 arrived, it was immediately clear that this was a step up from the more standard offerings I’ve used. The feature set alone, with its promise of five distinct effects, hinted at a more professional and creatively liberating experience. After putting it through its paces at a variety of gigs – from intimate acoustic sets to full-on dance party nights – I can say with certainty that it delivers on that promise. It’s an ambitious piece of gear, and a brilliant example of thoughtful engineering aimed at the working professional.
Unboxing the Gigabar FX1 reveals a well-made and reassuringly substantial unit. My first impression was that the build quality is exactly what you would expect at this price point: a solid and durable mixture of plastic and metal that gives you confidence it can handle the rigours of life on the road. The main carry bag and tripod bag are of great quality. Getting the light out of the bag was a little awkward, however, as it’s noticeably heavier than it looks, being smaller than many of the gig bars I’ve used in the past.
Setting the unit up on its tripod, the light truly comes alive, and its surprisingly compact nature immediately makes sense. This is definitely a light for anyone who wants something that both packs a powerful punch and is highly portable.
The use of PowerTwist connectors for power input and output is a fantastic professional touch. This type of locking connector is far more secure than the standard IEC cable, ensuring your power doesn’t accidentally disconnect mid-gig. The supplied height-adjustable stand is also solid and provides the necessary stability for a unit of this size, though I would prefer to swap it out for a stand with a base and pole. It’s a matter of personal preference, but the supplied stand will be perfectly suitable for many.
The true allure of the Gigabar FX1 is its comprehensive feature set, which packs an impressive eight lights on to a single, surprisingly compact bar. It’s an all-in-one lighting solution that’s truly designed to cover all your bases.
Let’s explore each component:
Two moving heads: The inclusion of two moving head fixtures is what truly elevates the Gigabar FX1 above many others. Powered by potent 30W white LEDs, these miniature moving heads are a creative powerhouse. They remind me of the old ADJ Inno Pocket Spots in both size and function, but the difference in power is immediately apparent. The Gigabar FX1’s 30W LEDs are a significant step up from the former’s 12W LEDs, and the brightness and punch are brilliant. The pan and tilt range (540° pan, 235° tilt) is impressive for a unit of this size, providing fluid and dynamic movement.
With the moving heads, you can do things that are simply impossible with a standard bar system, such as creating dynamic aerial sweeps or projecting patterned gobos. The inclusion of a gobo wheel with seven static gobos (plus open) and a colour wheel with seven colours (plus open) allows for a wide range of textured and coloured beam effects. The manual focus is a nice touch, giving you precise control over the sharpness of the gobos. The gobos and split colours are exactly what you’d want in something like this.
Two Derby effects: Adding dynamic movement and classic disco flair are the Derby effects, also powered by three 8W quad-colour (RGBW) COB LEDs. What surprised me most was that these Derbys are bigger and more robust than those found on usual bar systems, and they are fully adjustable.
They have the power to throw light across a small to medium venue, creating an energetic atmosphere with multiple sweeping beams of light that criss-cross the room.
The use of RGBW LEDs ensures the beams are vivid and punchy, adding a layer of energy that is essential for a high-impact dancefloor.
Two PARs: The system also features two PAR effects, each equipped with an 8W quad-colour (RGBW) COB LED. These PARs were smaller than I was expecting, but they did exactly what they needed to. They deliver a brilliant, vibrant colour wash with a 20° beam angle. The ability to mix to a true white (W) is a huge advantage, allowing for clean, crisp illumination that’s perfect for highlighting a performer or creating a classic stage wash.
The colours were good and bright, easily filling a small to medium-sized room with light and setting the perfect ambient tone.
One laser: While not my usual cup of tea, I have to admit this laser seemed better than what I’m normally used to on these sorts of lights. The integrated laser boasts a powerful 100mW red diode and a 30mW green diode, both of which are significantly brighter and more impactful than the lasers found on many of its competitors. It has different laser patterns built in, and the beams are crisp and well-defined, creating stunning aerial effects. As with any laser, safety is paramount.
Four strobes: For those moments of peak energy and dramatic visual punctuation, the Gigabar FX1 includes a dedicated strobe effect driven by four 1W white LEDs. With a wide 50° beam angle, these LEDs deliver a surprisingly effective, powerful flash that can cut through the other effects with ease. The strobe itself is very bright and has its own patterns, but I felt like it was so bright that it sort of takes over as the main effect when it is in full flow.
The Gigabar FX1 offers a versatile range of control options, catering to users of all experience levels. For simple, plug-and-play operation, the unit offers Auto and Sound Active modes. The sound-to-light mode is responsive and intelligently programmed, translating the dynamics of the music into a captivating light show without feeling chaotic or random. The Primary/Secondary (Master/Slave) mode is perfect for scaling up your setup, allowing you to link multiple units and have them all run in perfect synchronisation.
For those who crave more control, the unit features a DMX interface with 3-pin XLR input/output. It offers three selectable DMX channel modes: 3, 19, or 34. While the 3-channel mode allows for basic control, the 34-channel mode is where the Gigabar FX1 truly shines, offering granular control over every aspect of the unit.
A standout feature is the included foot controller, which connects to the unit via a 5-pin input. I could not test the DMX, but I’m confident that once this Gigabar FX1 can be controlled by my Wolfmix, it will change everything. We all have those small events where you don’t want to take all your big gear, and this light would be perfect for that.
While I’m not sure I would use all the available effects at once, if I can DMX the light for the way I like to use it, then I can definitely see the benefits. Yet another way to control each function of the light is via the included IR remote - so you have plenty of options.
In practice, the Equinox Gigabar FX1 is a formidable performer. The combination of its eight lights is well-balanced, and the unit delivers an impactful visual experience that can transform any space. The moving heads are the star of the show. Their ability to create dynamic sweeps, project gobos, and pinpoint specific areas adds a level of professionalism and creative flair that is simply not possible with a standard lighting bar. The brighter laser and powerful LEDs ensure that the effects are clearly visible and vibrant, even in medium-sized venues.
Overall, the Equinox Gigabar FX1 is a brilliant piece of kit that offers amazing value for money. One of these lights is perfect for small gigs, kids’ parties, and smaller venues. I think two of these lights would be brilliant for bands and for a DJ working in small to medium-sized venues who wants to fill the room with effects. Not only that, but setting up and packing down would be an absolute breeze. Would I buy one, or even two? Yes!
If you’re ready to graduate from a standard lighting bar to a more professional, feature-rich system that will truly elevate your performances, the Equinox Gigabar FX1 is an outstanding investment. It’s a testament to thoughtful design, giving you the power and versatility of a multi-fixture setup in a single, portable unit.
