REVIEWED: Equinox Fusion 120Q
The Equinox Fusion range of moving heads has recently had two new fixtures added – the 120Q and the 120TW. The two lights share many features, both are powered by 120W LEDs, weigh the same, use the same body and share similar controls, but the output of the two lights is very different.
The 120TW has a cool white (6,300k) and warm white (2,700k) COB LED with an outer ring of 26 tri-colour 5050 SMD LEDs, making it especially useful for use in theatres and in situations where photography or video is being shot. It’s a great looking light and – like the 120Q – makes for great eye candy, however the latter is going to be better for party situations, so is the subject of this review.
The Equinox Fusion 120Q is a compact yet powerful moving head wash light that delivers impressive performance with its 120W quad-colour COB LED (RGBW). Designed for both the mobile and installation markets, it offers huge versatility through multiple operational modes and high-quality colour mixing.
Light output and colour performance
The Fusion 120Q features a 35° beam angle, making it suitable for wash lighting applications, ideal for parties. The specification sheet boasts an output of 3,801 Lux at 2m (full on) and a CRI of 90, while producing vibrant and accurate colours, ensuring excellent tones and realistic hues. The colour temperature presets, and built-in colour macros, can be an advantage for those looking to enhance its usability, allowing users to quickly switch between different looks. To put it simply, the 120mm front lens contributes to superb colour rendering, ensuring a bright, consistent output across its beam.
Control and flexibility
The fixture supports multiple DMX channel modes (2, 9,12 or 16-channel), giving users flexibility depending on their level of control. For those who prefer automated or stand-alone operation, the auto, sound active, manual control, and master/slave modes provide convenient plug-and-play options. The 4-button menu with LED display allows for easy navigation and quick setup. Additionally, its quick speed and built-in light shows create dynamic effects that can instantly transform a venue with vivid washes of colour.
Equipped with 16-bit pan/tilt positioning, the Fusion 120Q offers smooth and accurate movements with a pan range of 540° and a tilt range of 220°. The pan/tilt auto correction feature ensures precise positioning even after accidental movement, making it highly reliable in live performance scenarios.
Dimming capabilities are comprehensive, ranging from 0-100%, with four dimming curves (linear, square law, inverse square law, and S-curve) to match different lighting needs. The variable strobe function adds dynamic effects, perfect for those big drops! The flexibility in dimming curves allows for smooth fades and transitions, making it an excellent choice for mobile DJs looking to create atmospheric effects.
Build and connectivity
The unit is compact and lightweight, measuring 292 x 204 x 162mm and weighing only 4kg. It includes a quick-release Omega clamp for easy rigging, ensuring a hassle-free installation process. PowerTwist TR1 input/output ensures a secure power connection, while 3-pin XLR input/output allows seamless DMX integration, making connectivity straightforward and problem-free. The fan-cooled design keeps the fixture at optimal temperatures during extended operation. With a power consumption of 121W and compatibility with 100-240V, 50/60Hz power supplies, the Fusion 120Q is energy-efficient and adaptable to different setups.
Practical uses for DJs
I used two of the 120Qs at a party and they proved to be a great addition, creating an engaging and professional light show. Here are two practical ways the light fixtures were used to enhance the evening’s performance:
As dance floor wash effects – with its wide beam angle, high-speed movements and built-in light shows, both Fusion 120Qs were used to periodically flood the dance floor with rich, vibrant colours.
You can use sound active mode to sync the master to beats, and although I tend to stay away from that mode, in this instance I tried it out and was impressed at how well they created an immersive and energetic atmosphere without needing to be manually controlled and it not getting too manic, usually the downside of sound mode.
So, we have a light which can be used as event uplighting or as effect – typically for weddings and corporate events. However, for my test the Fusion 120Qs were used for uplighting a venue’s stage area with ambient washes in pre-set colours. The lighting fixture’s use was doubled by creating a stage wash effect initially and then flipped occasionally to chase mode which worked very well to encourage dancing for faster tracks. After my test, I had a good read of the manual where I read about other ideas for use.
Thanks to colour temperature presets and macros, you can quickly adjust the fixture to suit the mood, from warm golden hues for speeches to vibrant colour chases for party segments.
The Equinox Fusion 120Q is an excellent choice for lighting professionals who need a compact, high-output moving head wash with rich colours, smooth movement, and versatile control options. Its generous, variable dimming curves and multiple operational modes make it suitable for various applications, from bands and small theatrical performances to pubs, bars and corporate events. With its sturdy build, easy setup, and reliable performance, it stands out as a valuable addition to any lighting rig. For mobile DJs, its quick setup, powerful wash effects, and built-in light shows make it a game-changer, ensuring every event is bathed in professional-grade lighting with minimal effort.
