The 00s soundtrack: Why it’s back

The 00s was a diverse decade, spanning genres like pop-punk, RnB, rock, hip-hop, dance and a fair amount of pure, unadulterated pop that included chart-toppers from the likes of Britney Spears, Westlife, Nelly, Usher, Killers, Avril Lavigne and Rihanna. Those artists dominated the charts and playlists back then, and now these tunes bring a rush of memories for millennials and older Gen Zs. The cultural resurgence of Y2K fashion and media has only added fuel to this music revival.

For DJs, the key is understanding that these tracks are more than just nostalgic hits—they’re memory triggers for first crushes, school dances and youthful summer nights. Playing them can instantly connect a crowd to their past, creating electric moments on the dancefloor.

There have been a number of 00s hits that have returned to the UK charts and become popular with DJs and audiences once again. Tracks like ‘Unwritten’ by Natasha Bedingfield and ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ by Sophie Ellis-Bextor became as popular again as they did when originally released.
