You’ll know that feeling you have when something you fully expect to happen, finally happens. I got exactly that in October last year when our hugely talented and incredibly supportive sub-editor, Greg Cartwright, called me to let me know that it was time for him to move on.
I absolutely knew the day would come. Greg is such a talented writer and content creator, but I have been aware for some time that he has a bright career that needs focusing on. I know that working as our sub-editor has eaten into his personal time and will have distracted him from his day job. Whatever I have thrown at him, he has always reacted in a calm manner, has regularly gone above and beyond and has also provided us with some of the most enjoyable and informative articles I’ve ever had the pleasure to read. And I do a lot of reading!
Thank you, Greg, you have been a rock. I know that settling into my role as editor would have been a lot harder without your unwavering support.
Welcome Josephine
A big welcome to our new sub-editor, Josephine Chadwick. Josephine is an extremely experienced editor with a background in daily newspapers and magazines and I’m looking forward to working with her. Her first article is all about those cover songs that became more famous than the originals. It’s an entertaining read, I hope you enjoy it.
The power of the collective
In November Steven and I were lucky enough to attend the SEDA 50th anniversary celebration. Lucky, because it was a Saturday night, we all know how rare one of those nights off is! We had a great time and it really brought home to me how essential it is to get together on a regular basis. By coming together and creating supportive networks our industry can only improve. If you aren’t regularly getting together with fellow DJs, make a plan to change that in 2025!
New year, new you
I’m sure you have a number of thoughts about how you’d like this year to go. You may have even made new year's resolutions, I hope they’re going well. I always like to look ahead and have a bit of a plan for several key parts of my life. None of the following will happen without good health and a certain amount of good luck – I know too many people who have suffered at the hands of fate and I can only keep going hoping for the best. With that in mind…
A new year is an opportunity to think about key changes that you might make to your business. For my own events business, this means an investment in automation. I’m very aware that there is a lot that can be done to make our lives easier, and I absolutely will be working on getting solid systems in.
I also fully intend to get together with fellow DJs and events businesses. In February I will be in Las Vegas for MEX & PBX, whilst in March we will have our second Focus & Retreat.
Focus & Retreat
In the run-up to last year's F&R, Steve and I promised each other that we would have a serious talk with ourselves if either of us ever floated the idea of running another one. Of course, that all changed when we were approached by several people asking when we would run it again. So, it's back by popular demand!
We will be using that event to really focus in on how any mobile DJ business can increase revenue and reduce workloads. That must be an aspiration for any business, and once again, I’m looking forward to the power of the collective.
I hope to see you on the other side of the pond, at Focus & Retreat or even both. I’ve been to so many of these events and every time I do, I think that I need to do more. Join us, you won’t regret it.
