In a brand-new series of articles called ‘My Cultural Life’, Paul talks to Pro Mobile’s Editor, Peter Holding, about some of his favourite things and places.
Song
My favourite song in the world is ‘The Rhythm Divine’ by the Swiss band Yellow. It's a beautiful, slow piece in a kind of gentle, waltz rhythm. Very haunting. It’s sung by Shirley Bassey on the finished track, but the original demo was recorded with Billy McKenzie from The Associates, a Scottish band.
The song is emotive and powerful; the most beautiful song I've heard in my life.
Album
I can give you three. ‘Man Machine’ by Kraftwerk was probably the most pivotal album for me. As a teenager I was being guided (or coerced) by my mum to join the RAF and be a pilot. I went along with it, but it was more her dream than mine. I was at Biggin Hill for the selection process when I realised it wasn't what I wanted to do.
‘Man Machine’ was in my head and was speaking to me; I literally walked out because I felt my life needed to follow a different path. The music on ‘Man Machine’ is super cool, innovative and ahead of its time – a life-changing album.
My two other favourites are ‘Wish You Were Here’ by Pink Floyd and ‘Ricochet’ by Tangerine Dream.
Film
There can only be one: Blade Runner. It's so far ahead of its time and such an important film that I will only watch it with somebody who’s special in my life. It’s pure storytelling. A vision of a dystopian world; right and wrong, love and hate, war and peace – everything, it's all in there.
