These groups were amongst those who pioneered the sound known as ‘nu metal’. This trend is down to the age of the couples getting married at the moment. Everyone has a favourite time in their lives when the music was “the best it’s ever been” and for couples in their thirties, this period is likely to have included some nu metal.

As DJs, we can always find a place for rock music at our events, with tracks like ‘Summer Of 69’, ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine and ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’ all still popular with audiences of all ages. Play some Queen, add a bit of Quo perhaps, then throw in some indie rock from Killers, Kings of Leon, Oasis and Blur… and you’re already on your way to a rock fan-pleasing set. So, why not take it a step further and incorporate some nu metal to deliver that nostalgia hit for the millennials in the room? Nu metal is a genre that takes heavy rock and grunge sounds and fuses them with elements of rap/hip hop and funk. It came to fruition in the latter part of the 1990s, with artists like Papa Roach, Slipknot and Korn, who all put out global hits that are once again enjoying popularity.

Whilst some nu metal tracks will only be for the purists, there are plenty of options to ensure everyone at the party is engaged in the music style. Mixing up nu metal tracks with some rap-rock – like ‘All Summer Long’ by Kid Rock, ‘(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)’ by Beastie Boys and ‘Walk This Way’ by Run-DMC feat. Aerosmith – allows you to build your set before unleashing the nu metal big guns. And if you need to lighten things up, you can throw in some pop-punk from the likes of Green Day, the Offspring, Blink-182 and even McFly and Busted, all of which will work with the right audience.

I can imagine there will be a few DJs reading this who may be frowning a little at the thought of playing some harder rock tracks at their events, but it’s worth doing a bit of research and taking the time to listen to a few nu metal classics – you might just be surprised!

As the kids who grew up on nu metal finally start tying the knot and requesting these tracks at events, it’s handy to have a selection in your DJ music library. Mastermix have created a Nu Metal Crate that features 20 classic tracks with the added bonus of all content being expletive free.
