But what about the setting? Whether it’s the smoky backroom of a small-town pub, a high-production DJ set in one of Ibiza’s superclubs, or a sunset performance at your favourite festival, the ‘where’ is often just as important as the ‘what’.

Over the years, artists have taken to performing in more and more unexpected places. Sometimes this is through their own ambition to play unusual venues and spaces, like when Johnny Cash had the brainwave to play for a bunch of prison inmates. Other times, it’s because companies decide to do insane things like persuade Katie Melua to perform at the bottom of the ocean for a staff party (seriously) or stick Jamiroquai on a moving jet (genius). And then there are the times when impromptu gigs happen because of external factors, like bad weather, protests or political upheaval.

With this in mind, I’ve trawled the internet to compile a list of gigs that took place in the most unusual locations or situations. They range from the weird to the wonderful; from the depths of the sea to the earth’s orbit, and everywhere in between…
