Well, I love a challenge and I also don’t do ‘ordinary’, so this was an opportunity to get creative and put together a set that fused both of these genres and kept everyone happy and engaged for the entire party. For wedding DJs the track ‘Best Day Of My Life’ by American Authors is a great example of a song that can be used to kick off a folk-pop set. From there you can go in any direction, but should you wish to venture down the folk-pop route then you’re going to take both you and your guests on an exciting musical journey.

Artists including Ed Sheeran, George Ezra, One Direction, Gary Barlow, Olly Murs and even McFly have all recorded songs with a folky vibe – tracks like ‘Castle On The Hill’ and ‘Paradise’ are good examples. These tracks are upbeat, fun, accessible to all ages and can take a party to a new level of euphoria.

But they also offer a folk feel that makes them work well with modern folk tracks from the likes of Mumford & Sons, Lumineers, James Bay and Vance Joy – all hugely popular modern folk artists who’ve recorded big festival anthems that are crowd pleasers for the right audiences.

Artists like OneRepublic and Train have also recorded tracks that fit this style. Even Avicii gets in on the act with his track ‘The Nights’, a choice that would allow you to fuse dance music into your set too.

I love the energy that a folk-pop fusion set delivers. The infectious music attracts everyone to the dancefloor rather than them sitting at the back of the room missing out on all the fun, almost creating a mini festival as part of the wider event.

I always like to push the envelope – and I encourage other DJs to do the same. Mixing up different styles of music makes things interesting, both for your client and their guests. It also sets you apart from other DJs.
