ARTICLE
The film features several famous names, including Ray Winstone, Toyah, Leslie Ash, Phil Daniels and Sting. Of course, the clothing, the haircuts and the scooters were all stylish and sharp. But for me much of the film’s appeal lay in one other thing: the music.

The soundtrack to the movie is a winning combination of rock, soul, rhythm and blues, ska, jazz and Motown – an eclectic mix that serves as the icing on this perfect cake of a film.

Focused on fashion and music, the 60s mod scene began as a subculture in London and spread throughout the UK as its popularity grew. Bands including the Yardbirds, the Rolling Stones and the Kinks were amongst those who embraced the scene and enjoyed a plethora of hits that were hugely popular with mod fans.

The scene wasn’t just about rock music, either. Early mods during the late 50s loved their modern jazz, listening to artists like Dave Brubeck and Charlie Parker, as well as pioneering rhythm-and-blues artists like Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley. As the 50s ended and the 60s began, the mods embraced the emerging ska music (acts such as the Skatalites, Derek Morgan, and Prince Buster) and selected soul and Motown anthems. By the mid-60s, British bands like The Who and The Small Faces were at the forefront of the scene.

Because of the eclectic mix of music tastes associated with the mod scene, it allows DJs to get creative. If you’re performing a soul and Motown or 60s set, then adding some mod classics will enhance your selection and showcase your music knowledge to an appreciative audience.

Equally, adding a few choice tracks to a mainstream set can turn a standard set into something unique for you and your guests – and make you stand out from the rest!

I really do encourage you to embrace the variety of this sub-genre. Give a few tracks a listen… I’m sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised and find loads of creative ways to incorporate them into your future sets.
