It's easy to paint a bleak picture of the pandemic; many of us saw a considerable drop in our income as events were swiftly postponed or cancelled. But like any crisis, it also forced people to think outside the box and come up with new ways of working.
During lockdown there were many success stories. Sophie Ellis-Bexter became known for her kitchen discos, which were really fun to watch. For me, the success factor here was seeing a family have fun in their own home at a time when we couldn’t visit our own families – it brought a sense of normality and connection.

Although, there was nothing new in live streaming from home. Years before Covid, Stephanie Hirst had been presenting her 'Kitchen Belters' which landed her a radio show on the Hits Radio network. The key to this success is largely down to it having been a consistent show.

Of course, during lockdown many DJs were live streaming and I’m sure some of you did. But how successful was it for you? A key problem I saw was that, like my own radio shows, you need to be consistent, just like Stephanie Hirst was. Your audience needs to know when you’ll be on. They’re not going to sit on Facebook and wait for your live stream.

In Pro Mobile 101, Rob Ferre told us how he adapted during the pandemic and started his doorstep dance parties. And around the time that edition hit my doormat, I was picking up rumours that the dance festival Tomorrowland was potentially announcing something big.

For those who don’t know, Tomorrowland is an EDM/dance music festival held in Belgium each July. After attending in 2019, I follow the festival closely and this summer I enjoyed watching live streams over the three weekends.

It was no surprise in 2020 to hear that Tomorrowland were forced to cancel. Although they simply moved tickets from 2020 to 2021 (and then 2022), this still left them with an income gap. This is where their creativity kicked in and their team went into overdrive creating a virtual festival.
