How you start any event is vital to its overall success and it's something I’ve spent lots of time developing as part of my professional growth. I’ve been a mobile DJ for over 40 years now, and in that time I’ve dramatically changed the way I start a night. When I first started out, I thought the only reason I was there was to fill the dancefloor with as many people as I could, as fast as I could.
I had no other thought about what I might play beyond that. Instead, I focused on how many lights I could turn up with and how loud I could make the music. In short, my focus was not about them, it was all about me.
It’s also worth remembering that first impressions count. How you turn up and how a guest first sees you can significantly impact the success of your event. It also forms a lasting impression of you as a DJ – especially important given that the public’s general impression of DJs is rarely positive.
There are two points in any event where most of the guests pay attention to us: at the very beginning (either before or after you’ve played your first song) and at the end of the night. Both moments offer a fantastic opportunity to exceed any expectations guests might have of a mobile DJ.
So, carrying on the theme from my last article, I contacted some of my esteemed colleagues to explore how they get their events off to the perfect start.
