I've written about using cycles to grow your business before. It's the same with working hard: you can't work hard all the time – and you shouldn't!

If you've been working hard for too long and aren’t making the progress you want to make, it's time to think about working smart. I used to work hard in my business all the time. I didn’t stop, even when I was on holiday. I slowed down a little, but I would still have to put a couple of hours in each day to keep things ticking over. These days, it's a different story. I just returned from holiday last week. Over the course of 14 days away I spent less than an hour working on my wedding business. That’s basically 10 minutes every few days. But guess what? We've booked more weddings this holiday than when I was working two hours every day on past getaways. It all keeps ticking along thanks to working smart.

Why is working smart so important?



It's about rhythm, timing and energy.

Imagine you’re at a gig and the dancefloor is full. You keep playing banger after banger, building the energy more and more. You reach the top, but then what next? Now, I’ve got nothing against a night of DnB, but at the average gig that constant high energy will eventually cause things to fall apart. Guests run out of energy or get bored! How do you keep them interested and on the dance floor? You maintain control by transitioning back down to something with a slower tempo, and then build it back up again.

The same applies when building your business.

You start off slow and as you gain momentum and things are picking up, you get busier and busier. Then what? Just like guests...
