Wombles Set To Return?
Dramatico Entertainment, the home of The Wombles, has announced a forthcoming relaunch of the popular furry group.
Following their major acquisition in Wombles Copyright Holdings, Dramatico Ent. Is planning a “holistic, multi-platform re-launch” which includes a tour of The Wombles pop group. Co-Executive Producer Genevieve Dexter enthused about the comeback “Many people have attempted to bring back classic properties, and failed,” said Dexter. “What sets The Wombles apart is that they were ahead of their time, as the first recycling enthusiasts and with the extra dimension of the band which brought them to a family arena.”
The fluffy group hasn’t actually done too badly in the charts in the past, with their studio albums ‘Wombling Song’, ‘Remember You’re A Womble’, ‘Keep On Wombling’ and ‘Superwombling’ all reaching the top 20 in the UK. The have also released an incredible 42 singles, with their most famous ‘Remember You’re A Womble’ reaching number 3 in the UK charts back in 1974. Mike Batt wrote the music for the successful Wombles TV series in the early 70s, asking for the character rights for musical production rather than a one-off fee and went on to produce a string of hit singles and albums under the brand.
The Wombles are also returning to the small screen in a computer-generated series on Channel 5. The 11-minute shorts will appear on the channel’s pre-school segment Milkshake in 2015. "The time is right for it to gain a whole new following," said Jessica Symons, Channel 5's head of children's. "There are audiences of new children and international audiences who missed The Wombles the first time around," adds Mike Batt.
