Sting Announces New Album & Musical
Sting is set to release his first new material in ten years. After years of live albums and re-releases, ‘The Last Ship’ will be the new original album from the ex Police front man.

The album, which is scheduled for release in the autumn, will form the soundtrack for a new musical that Sting is also currently writing. The musical, also called 'The Last Ship', is about the ship yard in his hometown of Wallsend. He has been writing the songs for over three years alongside John Logan, who just won an Academy Award for the song ‘Skyfall’, and Brian Yorkey who wrote the musical ‘Next to Normal’.

According to a post in the Times, the songs on ‘The Last Ship’ were written in advance of the show’s plot with the title song being a waltz-time folk tune which is heavy with Christian imagery and sung in a Northern English dialect. Another song, ‘And Yet’, is a jazzy funk number sung from the point of view of a sailor arriving in his home port and wondering about a woman left behind.

Sting wrote about his recollections of the shipbuilding industry on his website. “My early memories are of the Swan Hunters shipyard at the end of the street, where some of the largest ships ever built were constructed; the imposing presence of ships, towering over the roofs of the terraced houses we lived in, represented a very potent symbolism for me,” he wrote. “I watched thousands of men walk down our street every day on their way to work on these mighty ships. My great-great-grandfather was a master mariner, one of my grandfathers was a North Sea pilot, another was a shipwright and my father served his time as an engineer.”

‘The Last Ship’ album is scheduled for a September the 24th release, Sting's first new material since 2003's ‘A Sacred Love’ (pictured below). ‘The Last Ship’ the musical will be directed by Wicked’s Joe Mantello and preview in New York in 2014.
