Greatest Rock Covers Announced
UK radio station Planet Rock has named the greatest rock covers of all time as voted by their listeners. It may be no surprise that ‘All Along The Watchtower’ made it to number one.
The smash tune, which is still as popular as ever today, was originally written and performed by Bob Dylan and appeared on his 1967 album ‘John Wesley Harding’. It was then covered just six months later by Jimi Hendrix with the Jimi Hendrix Experience and reached the top 20. It has also been covered by Paul Weller, Van Morrison, Supertramp, XTC and Chris de Burgh to name but a few.
The Irish folk classic made famous by The Dubliners ‘Whisky In A Jar’ came next. The track was first recorded in the 1950s and famously covered by Thin Lizzy in the 1970s, but it was Metallica (pictured below) that introduced the song to a hard rock audience and won the Grammy for ‘Best Hard Rock Performance’ in 2000. The original Beatles track and ‘The Wonder Years’ theme tune ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ comes 3rd. Recently the track was covered by Mumford & Sons, one of around 50 covers of the tune since it was orginally written, however Joe Cocker's memorable version is the one cited in the list. Other artists to appear in the top 10 include Guns ‘n’ Roses, Van Halen and Peter Frampton.
