Compilation Sales On The Rise!
Despite the predicted demise of compilations with the rise in popularity of digital downloading, sales have actually increased recently - soaring to more than 20 million in 2012.

Users of download site iTunes seem to have realised that individual tracks are costing more than a collection as a whole. Purchases of compilations increased by 7.2% last year and the ‘Now!’ franchise had its best sales figures in 11 years. Their latest release ‘Now That’s What I Call Music! 84’ is the fastest selling album so far this year.

The cost of an individual track is around 99p whilst a compilation costs around £10-£12 and contains around 40 songs which equates to just 28.5p per track. British Recorded Music Industry (BPI) chief executive Geoff Taylor said the collections were going against buying trends: “Despite the availability of tracks as individual downloads, compilations - led by the ‘Now!’ series - are confounding expectations and performing better than ever. Not only are music fans getting superb value from double and triple album titles brimming with hits, but a string of newly-themed albums have established themselves over the last year.”

The ‘Now!’ series is by far the UK’s leading compilation brand and original vinyl versions of early releases, which began in 1983, have become valuable collectibles worth up to £200 each. The ‘Now!’ brand has a variety of albums in the overall 2012 top 20 compilations chart, including specialist Reggae, Disney and Christmas collections.
