US Band Haim Wins BBC Sound Of 2013
Mobile DJs may want to start giving American folk band Haim a listen now that they are tipped to be the next big thing. The trio beat off competition from 14 other acts to win the coveted BBC Sound of 2013 award.

The group, which includes three sisters from California, has been compared to 70s band Fleetwood Mac and already performed with Florence and the Machine as well as Mumford and Sons. The siblings, Alana, Este and Danielle Haim who are aged between 21 and 26, started playing music as infants with their parent’s covers band, "it was really cool," says Alana, "until we were about 11.” The girls then ventured out on their own to the live music circuit in 2006.

Haim’s songs are feel-good, 70s rock/80s synth-pop style and have won over critics. BBC Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens said Haim had a "contagious enthusiasm and “an unapologetic passion for music that shines in their songs. They're brilliant musicians who have a real talent for tunes that merge their tales of growing up in the 21st Century with classic songwriting ability." Matt Wilkinson, NME’s New Bands Editor, said Haim were a “killer live band” who “talk-the-talk miles better” than the “boring Indie bands who seem to almost be embarrassed to be featured on mainstream radio or in magazines like NME.”

The BBC Sound award nominees are chosen by a list of 213 UK-based critics, broadcasters and bloggers who have to select their three favourite new acts. The longlist of the top 15 artists was published in December and it is the first time all top five acts have been all female/fronted by women. Haim said that they were "unbelievably honoured" to win the award and added, "we have found our second home in the UK! We can't wait to release new music and play as many shows as possible this year. Thank you to everyone who voted for us! We are so excited.”

The top five acts for 2013 were:

1. Haim

2. Aluna George

3. Angel Haze

4. Laura Mvula

5. Chvrches
