Cher Makes Chart History
The world’s funkiest pensioner, Cher, has made chart history with her single ‘Believe’. The 1998 single has been announced as the best-selling track by a female artist in the UK.
The release spent seven weeks at number One and has sold almost 1.78 million copies so far. ‘Believe’ (pictured below) was included on Cher’s 22 album of the same name and reached no.1 in 18 countries.
To commemorate this month’s International Women’s Day, OfficialCharts.com has compiled the full top 40 list of most popular UK female singles. With Cher nabbing the top spot, it could only be Whitney Houston in 2nd place with the warbler ‘I Will Always Love You’, from The Bodyguard soundtrack. Since its release in 1992, this ultimate weepy song has shifted an incredible 1.58 million copies to date.
The Princess of Pop Britney Spears completes the top 3 with her debut ‘Baby One More Time’, which was released an incredible 15 years ago! The track moved 460,000 copies in its first week but surprisingly spent just two weeks at no. 1.
Celine Dion manages to notch up two singles in the top 10 with her 1994 hit ‘Think Twice’ and the ultimate night-ender and Titanic single ‘My Heart Will Go On’. Our favourite Brit songstress Adele also makes it into the top 10, in 5th place is her single ‘Someone Like You’ which has sold 1.53 million copies.
Only one girl group have made it into the higher numbers, the All Saints single ‘Never Ever’, which was their first no. 1, remains in 10th place.
