Roger Squire Receives Lifetime Achievement Award at Pro Mobile Conference 2015
Earlier this week the Pro Mobile Conference returned for a third consecutive year, with over 100 delegates gathering for two focussed days of learning, networking, product testing and socialising. At the Sunday evening Gala Dinner, before the sensational live karaoke band Rockaoke took to the stage, ‘Godfather of Mobile DJing’ Roger Squire was presented the Pro Mobile Lifetime Achievement Award, honouring his legacy as a pioneering mobile DJ and equipment supplier.

Starting out in the sixties, and influenced by the DJs on pirate radio, Roger was one of the first to use recorded music, two turntables and his newly-developed mic skills to offer an alternative to the sober string quartets and waltzes associated with wedding entertainment at the time. In the process, he coined the term ‘mobile discotheque’ and began to market his services like nobody ever had before; evolving a format that influenced mobile DJs working today. Roger quickly expanded his business into what many consider to be the first mobile DJ multi-op. He also began selling equipment to other DJs – something only made possible by his ‘buying trips’ abroad, one of which he details in the current issue of Pro Mobile Magazine (Issue 70) in the article ‘Kidnapped in Manila’.

Announced by Eddie Short, Editor of Pro Mobile, and presented by Dave Campbell of award sponsor DJ Guard, Roger accepted the award with modesty. He left the stage to a standing ovation, after making a humbled but self-assured speech that congratulated current mobile DJs and reinforced the spirit of the Conference.

“I’m very proud, I’m very honoured,” Roger told us. “Do I deserve it? I really don’t know. In a way I don’t, because… Lifetime Achievement Award… I’ve been absent from the market for a long time. But on the other hand I was the pioneer. I pioneered the mobile disco formula and did it very well. I pioneered equipment supply and I did that – so people tell me – very well.”

“So, I did make a big impact. And a lot of people here tonight got their first equipment from me before I left the business. So, I appear to have had a big impact on the market – bigger than I realised at the time. The reason would be: I did it with great passion. If you’re passionate and have some talent, you can go a long way. But, partly, I was just in the right place at the right time...”

The third annual Pro Mobile Conference took place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, in Oxfordshire’s tranquil Heythrop Park, from Sunday the 9th to Monday the 10th of March. Attracting DJs from across the UK and Ireland, the Conference saw award-winning speakers and top brands provide delegates with two days of useful educational content, interactive product demos and the chance to network with like-minded DJs and industry luminaries.

Each year the Pro Mobile Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an inspiring individual whose legacy within the industry has had an impact on mobile DJs, as well as on the Pro Mobile publication itself.
