Dame Vera Lynn Announces New Album At 97
The original ‘Forces Sweetheart’ is celebrating her 97th birthday with the release of new album ‘Vera Lynn: National Treasure The Ultimate Collection’.
The new album is set for release in June to mark the 70th anniversary of the World War II D-Day Landings. The release will feature a selection of Lynn’s most memorable and morale-boosting hits from the wartime period, but also some additional tracks recently discovered by her daughter Virginia.
Dame Vera commented on the release of her album, “I think it's wonderful that my songs are still enjoyed, especially if it encourages people to commemorate what happened seventy years ago. It's moving for me to relive those days, and humbling to know that people still think of me, after all, it was simply my duty to keep singing”.
The creation of the collection was inspired by the recently published ‘British Hit Singles The Missing Charts’, the book collates the singles from 1940 to 1952 and reveals that Vera Lynn had the first UK no.1 record with ‘We’ll Meet Again’. The UK official charts have only been published since 1952, before this it was only in the US where record releases were tracked. Sales figures have since been collected from major wholesalers, backtracking the figures to 1940, the publication is the result of years of analysis and only now do we have an accurate picture of what the British public bought during those difficult years.
Lynn’s new collection also marks her 90 years in show business, starting her lengthy career at the tender age of 7. All recordings have been re-mastered for this release, and include some of her classics, ‘Yours’, ‘The White Cliffs Of Dover’, ‘You’ll Never Know’ and ‘It Can’t Be Wrong’.
‘Vera Lynn: National Treasure The Ultimate Collection’ will be released on the 2nd of June through Decca Records.
