Aretha Franklin To Cover Bootylicious?
Soul legend Aretha Franklin has announced that she is working on an album of cover versions for release in 2014, even joking that she might include a rendition of the Destiny’s Child smash ‘Bootylicious’.
The album sees Franklin working alongside superstar production team Babyface, Don Was and Clive Davis to create an interpretation of hits from female icons. "They're records that, musically, I respected and that I liked a lot and that I would love to have one go-round with," she told Billboard. "It's a concept CD," Franklin added, revealing that the 10 songs were selected from an "ultimate list", including Barbra Streisand's 'People' and Donna Summer's 'Last Dance'.
The songstress added that she was hoping to release the album nearer summer time through RCA records, discussing the content she added, "It's just re-working some things that were very, very good and certainly chartworthy and sold a lot of records. I aspire for musical excellence. I have very high standards where music is concerned, and I'm looking for something I haven't done, something that you haven't heard and something just absolutely smashing."
Aretha began working on the album this week after a turbulent few months, including her first album in almost a decade, a broken off engagement, and an unknown illness which meant she had to cancel several performances. Now the 71 year old describes herself as being at “85% but well and ready to go” ahead of her hometown Detroit shows on the 17th and 18th of January.
Franklin is most famous for her early hits such as ‘Respect’, ‘(You Make Me Feel) Like A Natural Woman’ and ‘Think’. Known throughout the world as ‘The Queen of Soul’ Franklin has clocked up 24 top ten albums in the UK alone.
