BBC Sound Of 2014
The BBC Sound Of 2014 longlist has been announced, with 10 UK acts among the 15 names confirmed.
170 music industry specialists including DJs, bloggers, critics and broadcasters were asked to name their three favourite new acts in order for the list to be compiled. DJ Nick Grimshaw will then reveal the top 5 acts on BBC Radio 1 each morning from Monday the 6th of January 2014, counting down to the winner.
Last year’s winners Haim went on to have a number 1 debut album ‘Days Are Gone’ back in October with other previous recipients including Ellie Goulding, Adele and Jessie J. 2014 acts include a range of artists, from a Chicago hip-hop performer called Chance the Rapper, to 18 year old Maidenhead pop solo artist Chloe Howl.
Several of the acts have previously collaborated with other well-known performers. 21 year old Sam Smith appeared on Disclosure’s top 20 single ‘Latch’ in 2012 as well as the number 1 single ‘La La La’ by Naughty Boy earlier this year. MNEK, real name Uzoechi Osisioma Emenik, has written and produced material for Rudimental, Duke Dumont, Little Mix, The Saturdays and Sub Focus.
Other acts to feature on the longlist are Sampha, an electronic producer and vocalist from South London, who has worked with Drake, Jessie Ware and SBTRK. Ella Eyre (pictured below), a 19 year old RnB singer, has also made the list. Ella provided lead vocals for the number 1 single ‘Waiting All Night’ by Rudimental early this year, she has also worked with Bastille and Wiz Khalifa.
George Ergatoudis, Head of Music for BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, said: “Unless you happen to have a handy Tardis there’s no better way to get a glimpse into the future of music than the BBC’s Sound Of 2014. The annual longlist compiled by BBC News remains the definitive survey of the UK’s key musical tastemakers and in the highly competitive world of popular music a place on the list is highly prized. This year’s list features a fascinating and diverse range of talented artists, the majority from the UK, and all are definitely worth a listen.”
