Spring has always been about renewal, a time to refresh, reinvigorate, and look forward with a positive mindset. I've no idea what they put in those sun's rays, but it works wonders! That said, I remain very concerned about the DJ industry as a whole, and in particular, where the mobile DJ community is heading.

We've enjoyed a good run, witnessing numerous shows over the years where manufacturers gathered to showcase the latest and greatest kit. Astonishingly, as it stands, there isn't a single event of this type planned for this year. I've taken a quick look at the niche sector trade shows that exist.
At Olympia London, there's the ‘Ceramic Art London’ show, while at the NEC in Birmingham, there's a ‘Festival of Accounting and Bookkeeping’. If accounting is your thing, then there's ‘Accountex Summit’ at Manchester Central, but if you find all that a bit boring, why not attend ‘Horror Con Scotland’ at the SEC in Glasgow? It feels like every single niche sector in the UK is represented by at least one major trade show.

Yet, a show for DJs? Nothing major is currently planned.

We work in what I consider one of the most incredible sectors: it involves something pretty much every human being on the planet loves - music. Then we have all sorts of sound and lighting, all of which is continually being updated and improved. And yet…

And then there's the declining retail sector. I've been vocal about this for a long time, but buying equipment for any DJ business from abroad is not a great idea. You're hit with additional taxes (unless it somehow slips through the net), returns are impossible when items are faulty, and you lack someone to turn to in a crisis - all to save a tenner. So, what's the alternative? I've said on these pages many times - support your local retailer. They work very hard to deliver brilliant service, and they're there for you when it matters most. Plus, if there's any show or gathering of any kind and you can make it, then make an effort to show up.

Speaking of showing up, I had a really good conversation with Marcos Aranibar in Las Vegas in February.
Marcos and his wife decided to attend the Mobile Entertainment and Photobooth Expos and had an absolute blast. They also made a connection that will transform one particular part of their business. That was very gratifying to see. But what was even better was a conversation we had about how Pro Mobile events had, in Marcos’ words, “changed everything.” He spoke very passionately of what he learned about the industry, kit he could sell to his existing customers, and partnerships he had struck up.

All of which leads me to Focus & Retreat. Amazingly, we still have a few spaces left. Don't let this opportunity slip away. This is your chance to invest in your business, your skills, and your future. If you have any reservations about coming at all, then pick up the phone and call me right now. I'll even do you a deal – because I believe in the power of what we put on to transform your career. We need to reignite the spirit of our industry, and we need your energy to do it. Let's make it happen.
