It’s one of those topics we love to turn our noses up at: good old ‘elf and safety. Of course, things weren’t the same back in the good old days before the clipboard waving inspectors came to ruin our fun. I mean, what’s wrong with people working without PPE and simply relying on common sense?
Often there’s a fine line between using common sense and staying safe, probably, at least in my eyes, because you need common sense to be safe. But whilst I couldn’t agree more that common sense is important (and often lacking in today’s world!), disregarding the more formal side of health and safety ignores the fact that it has improved working conditions and workplace safety for all of us. And one of those formalities is the risk assessment.
Be honest now, how many of you have an up-to-date risk assessment?
I’ll be the first to admit that I hate doing them. I don’t believe I’m safe just because I have a piece of paper. I’m a big fan of using common sense. But common sense won’t help me if something goes wrong outside of my control.
