In January, Pro Mobile held our first ever Focus & Retreat. A two-day stay held at the Balmer Lawn Hotel in the heart of the New Forest, the event was designed as a less formal occasion than traditionally associated with Pro Mobile Conference.

Restricted to just 53 DJs, some with their partners and even family pets, attendees were treated to an extended networking session, beer and pizza, Pro Mobile’s annual awards presentation, an informal opportunity to get on the decks, a mini-showroom of new and secondhand kit as well as a packed day of seminars.

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many taking the opportunity to enjoy an extended winter-break in Europe’s number one national park (Tripadvisor 2023). The seminars were delivered by Pro Mobile readers and contributors, the majority of whom are mobile DJs, with a special guest appearance by Paul Dakeyne.

Our awards presentation, held during a Sunday evening of networking, beer and pizza and live DJ sessions, was hosted by Pro Mobile's editor, Peter Holding and the Balmer Lawn Hotel's general manager, Michael Clitheroe.

Michael, finalist for general manager of the year in 2019 and 2022 at the Boutique Hoteliers awards, welcomed attendees to the venue and led a Q&A on DJ and venue relationships.

Monday saw a packed day of intensive seminars from a range of successful mobile DJs as well as a special guest appearance by DJ, producer and remixer, Paul Dakeyne, who demonstrated how he deconstructed George Michael's 'Careless Whisper' and turned it into a dancefloor hit.

Pat Mulligan looked in detail at what it takes to take a wedding celebration to a new level, Jack Quenby discussed business strategy, Jimmy Lee revealed his approach to packaging products, Teejai Hayter delivered a seminar on social media, including TikTok and Instagram and did a live demo of CapCut, and Alastair Craig discussed his journey from part-time to full-time mobile DJ.

Our final seminar of the day came from Richard Lee, who revealed his approach to looking after customers, in particular during crunch points.
