I admit to previously being quite blasé about the potential of this ever happening to me, as it just hadn’t. I knew my MacBook was rock solid. Just to be sure, I did have a Plan B; I had Rekordbox USBs to place into my CDJs. But then one day I finally experienced that sobering moment.
Envisage this: I’m playing to a packed room of 3,000 people. Jimmy Somerville has just finished his incredible set with an orchestra, giving me imposter syndrome (how do I follow that?). The crowd is roaring their approval at a sublime performance, the most incredible live music set I’d ever experienced, and now it’s my turn. I press play, the speakers fill the air with Erasure’s ‘A Little Respect’, the crowd responds by singing every word at the top of their voices.
And then suddenly there’s nothing. Absolute silence.
In panic, I look at the screen. Serato is still performing, so my eyes jump to the mixer – nothing. So where is the sound? I start checking cable connections, all present and correct. Everything is as it should be, but there’s nothing to be heard aside from the crowd, who thankfully think this is all part of the act and have carried on singing.
Then I realise that my USB hub has crashed! I reach for the USB input. The USBs, where are the bloody USBs? The one time I haven’t taken them out of my bag is the one time that I need them, absolutely ...
