Coffee To Go!

I’d arranged to meet radio legend Mark Goodier at a cafe on Great Titchfield Street in London. I’d spoken to Mark on numerous occasions as he was a huge fan of Mastermix but had never met him in person.

At that time, Mark was still hosting a regular show on BBC Radio 1 and I was nervous to meet such a big radio star, so I invited my mate Rob Moore to join me. Rob thought we were meeting Bruno Brookes and I had to remind him on several occasions not to mix up the names and embarrass me in front of one of radio’s heroes.

Mark arrived...

Alright Dave!

Despite my coffee faux-pas I became good friends with Mark, and we spoke often. It became a bit of an ‘in-joke’ with some of my industry friends but backfired when I received a call from him on my mobile phone during a radio festival where...

One Lump Or Two?

A well-known radio presenter – who shall remain nameless for this particular story – had visited Mastermix HQ to discuss a project with me. I made him a coffee and added a spoonful of sugar as requested. A moment later and the radio star was spitting his coffee across the kitchen before leaving in the direction of the toilets. I cleaned...

Come Fly With Me!

I found myself in Norway with Pat Sharp, who had invited me to join him on a three-day tour that also featured a number of 80s and 90s pop stars. I assumed we would fly ...

Just My Imagination

I was attending an industry bash somewhere in London and mixing with several celebrities, including some 80s pop stars who were there to promote a new retro tour. I was...

Meal For Three!

I was working with legendary DJ, producer and radio presenter Danny Rampling on a range of digital albums for Mastermix and had agreed to meet him and his wife for dinner to discuss things in more detail.

I arrived at the restaurant and...

Shaddap You Face!

A few years ago the Music Factory Entertainment Group were working with singer Jane McDonald to produce some of her tracks and promote her tour. I was invited along to a live show and had asked a song-writing friend of mine if he’d like to come along. At the time he was working with an Italian opera singer and he...

Don’t Be Cheeky!

Another bizarre memory is managing and producing the Cheeky Girls for a short while. This included a memorable live appearance by the girls on the Mastermix trade stand at Plasa in Earls Court. To secure the girls’ appearance, I was requested by their manager Margaret to fax a contract over. So I gave her a call to confirm all the details.

“Hello, darling, Margaret here,” she said. I explained it was Richard from Mastermix and that I was going to send the fax as soon as we got off the phone. “OK, darling. Bye.”

I then spent the next 15 minutes repeatedly trying to send a fax, only for ...

You Can Take The Man Out Of Yorkshire…

I’ll share this story but won’t mention any names, mainly because I’d drunk a fair bit and whilst I can remember some of the story, I can’t be sure who was there or where it was! I was invited to attend a music awards night at one of London’s finest hotels. My table was full of music industry people and a few celebrities from that world.
Once again, I had been introduced as “that guy whose family did the Jive Bunny stuff.” This was well received by all...

Pop Quiz!

Mike Read was hosting a pop quiz for the Nordorf Robbins charity and I was attending as a guest of some record industry friends. The quiz was always taken very seriously, with teams from major record labels, BBC, radio, TV and media all taking part. After dinner, the former Radio 1 DJ kicked off the quiz and although we ended it with a respectful score, we didn’t win. I was told that things get a bit rowdy after the quiz and as food started hurtling around the room, mainly in the direction of winning team, I realised that the tradition stood.

The thing was, I really wanted a photo with Mike Read. But as I made my way towards him, I was...
