During this time, there has been a huge change in how they’re run and what we’re required to do. It wasn’t all that long ago that getting married was a simple ceremony followed by a party, but now a marriage often starts with an elaborate affair costing tens of thousands. As the industry has changed, I’ve moved with the times, changing what I do. This has resulted in regional awards and ultimately winning the prestigious Wedding Industry Awards ‘National Wedding DJ of the Year’ in 2019. I now serve as a judge on the national panel. Sadly, there is no way I can tell you everything that I’ve spent over 40 years working on, but hopefully some of what I’m about to share will help you on a path to success as a wedding DJ.

Acknowledging the stress your client is experiencing

In 2005, I started planning my wedding to Anna Marie, which took place on 10th June 2006. The preparation included figuring out our guest list and visiting various wedding fares. The only thing we knew for sure was that we wanted a simple affair, starting with a registry service in Andover, where I live, and then back to our home for a small celebration with friends and family. I really wanted to avoid being in a venue that would feel like most weekends of work as a DJ.

So, how hard could this be for someone in the business who had worked at hundreds of weddings? Back then, I didn't specialise in weddings. I wasn't a wedding DJ, but a DJ that also did weddings. And yes, there is a difference!

Anyone who has arranged a wedding knows that you soon become overwhelmed.

For me, there were all sorts of things causing me stress: my suit, Anna’s dress (OK, maybe I didn't get too involved with that), choosing a best man (or in my case, best woman), the wedding car, the food, drink and dietary requirements, not to mention that ever-present British worry – the weather. We were also dealing with an unforeseen complication: a family member was given a life-threatening diagnosis which meant they might not even make the wedding date.

Everything went well on the day itself – well, everything except it being the hottest day of the year, which meant the chocolate wedding cake that Anna Marie had fallen in love with almost melted away! (Oh, and rather embarrassingly for a seasoned DJ, my laptop started to do a backup, which meant we had no music for the first hour.)
At the end of the night, we waved goodbye to the last of our guests and Anna Marie headed upstairs to bed. I carried on with the tidying up, not wishing to face the aftermath in the morning! It was then that I had a eureka moment.

Not only had I arranged my wedding, but I’d also hosted it. So, I wondered, what if there was someone you could employ that could help you plan your wedding day as well as work as your host?

The reason I share this story is that every couple we work for experience the same sense of being overwhelmed. They’re looking for help, regardless of whether we’re there for the evening or for the whole day. The success of a wedding is critical to any couple, and for that reason, it should never be viewed as ‘just another gig’. Your brides and grooms certainly don’t see it that way.
