They are the moments that every DJ lives for, far outweighing the grief we sometimes receive from unreasonable and negative punters. They are the moments that we remember for a long time, sometimes years, or even decades, depending how big a high it was, and most DJs will still be able to tell you what the tune was that dropped the bomb. Even when this happens regularly, it’s still a buzz like no other.
But have you ever stopped to analyse the dynamics that came together to cause that magical moment? They'll be different every time, and can sometimes be completely beyond the control of the DJ (if we're honest, we've all had experiences when it came out of the blue, totally unexpected and certainly not planned). Obviously we want every song we play to receive a great reaction from the crowd, but it's not realistic to expect that from every song. We've all had experiences where we've played a song we were sure would smash the place, but, for some reason, it didn't.

Even the highest earning DJs on the planet aren't able to drop bombs with every single song. There will be times for every single one of us where we have to rely on luck and a combination of factors all catalysing at the same time.

Here are some elements that contribute to these ‘bomb drop’ moments happening:

We're one with the crowd

When we're totally in the zone and it's like we're one with the audience and we can read them exactly. We take the crowd higher and higher and higher, until the place feels like it's about to explode.

The perfect pass

We just played a song that turned up the heat and our spider senses zoned in on the perfect track to throw down next, launching a metaphorical missile.

The perfect moment

Earlier in the day/evening we heard a guest (at a wedding; maybe in the speeches) mention a song that the host, groom or bride used to love. We wait until just the right moment to play it.

Building up to the crescendo

Similar to the last one. There is a song that we know some guests like, but if played too early will lack the punch. We gauge perfectly that 10.45pm is the time that it will set off the volcano, and masterfully create a build up with the songs we play leading up to that point.

The killer request

A request has come in from a guest and we instantly know this will smash the dancefloor, because we can just sense the atmosphere in the room.

The people reader

DJs at the top of their game have developed the ability to read who in the room/event are the influencers. It isn't necessarily the host, although it can be. There are many different types of people who can be influencers, including:

Everybody's friend

Sometimes the influencer can be a person who has an amazing personality that everyone is drawn to and they have a natural ability to draw people onto the dancefloor with them.

The dancing machine

When this person dances, everyone gathers around or on the dancefloor to watch in awe, and all the crowd shouts out their appreciation and encouragement.

Mr Enthusiastic

Much like 'everybody's friend', this guy dances with so much enthusiasm and loves to pull others on to the floor to join them.
