ARTICLE
By Lawrence Lonsdale.
Pro Mobile Focus 2019 was a great event. Eddie and the Pro Mobile team did a fantastic job of getting a good variety of people to speak and share their knowledge and experience. There were DJs in the room who were just starting their career and DJs who have been in the industry for 30+ years, and everyone was positive and fully engaged throughout the whole day. I personally took away useful ideas and advice from all the keynote speakers and really enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with so many experienced colleagues.

The first talk of the day was from Tony Winyard who covered a lot of ground, encouraging us to value ourselves and look after our health. In an accessible way, he explained how exercise, getting enough sleep and balancing our diet can help us improve our performance and achieve a better quality of life.

Next up was Peter Holding, who shared his ‘Four Pillars of Customer Service’. He explained why it is essential for a client to trust you, but more than that, they need to like dealing with you. He went on to share specific tips and ideas for improving customer service and then challenged us all with an interactive task putting the principles into practice!

In between the keynote talks we also had the chance to share our own ideas and experience in two ‘think tank’ sessions. I particularly liked the one where we talked about the particular DJ software we use. Grouped into tables of users of the same software (one for Virtual DJ, one for rekordbox etc.) we shared with each other how we organise our music collection and prepare our sets, which proved to be both interesting and useful.

After lunch it was time for the man from Mastermix, Mr Richard Lee, to speak to us about arguably the most important tool for any DJ: music. He started by sharing, in a light-hearted and amusing way, some of the musical mistakes he made early on in his career, for example playing Tammy Wynette’s D.I.V.O.R.C.E at a wedding! He then went on to share two new concepts for using music in creative ways to enhance modern events that have proved popular with his own DJ clients. Not only was this session interesting and informative, it was packed full of laughter throughout!

To finish off the day we had the wonderful Euan Bass, who introduced us to the concept of the 6* review and gave us tips for getting them. He explained the importance of going the extra mile for a client even before we entertain them at their event. This was a big eye-opener for me, as it is something I had never thought about before.

Now that Pro Mobile Focus is over, the next opportunity for mobile DJ learning from Pro Mobile is the Conference in March 2020. If you’re thinking about coming to the Pro Mobile Conference, stop thinking about it and just book your place! What you will learn for your business and the camaraderie you will experience with the other people in the industry really is priceless. The DJs who come to these events are welcoming, nice and kind people, who genuinely want to help other DJs in the industry out.

I look forward to seeing you there, but until then, keep ‘em dancing! (Sorry Eddie, I know I nicked your line!!)
