Elton John Wins Brit Icon Award
Sir Elton John will be awarded the honour from the BPI (British Record Music Industry), co-owners of the Official Charts Company.
The gong is set to become part of the Brit Awards and will only be given to artists who have made an impact on our nation’s culture. This can be through writing, recording and performances that set them apart from other musicians. Sir Elton John said: "It's a tremendous honour and a real thrill for me to have my work acknowledged in this way, and I'm really looking forward to participating in what promises to be a very special occasion."
The ceremony will take place in central London on the 2nd of September and will be shown on ITV later that month. Sir Elton will perform some of his most famous songs along with new material from his forthcoming album ‘The Diving Board’. An interview is also scheduled and several ‘special guest appearances’.
BPI and Brit Awards CEO Geoff Taylor added: “The Brit Awards has recognised many exceptional artists whose music has connected with millions of fans. A few of these artists, such as Sir Elton John, have achieved such a level of artistic creativity and originality, critical acclaim, global recognition and popular success that they deserve to be recognised as true Icons of our cultural life. With our broadcast partners ITV, our aim is to provide the ultimate tribute to these musical superheroes, which not only recognises their unique achievements but which is also spectacular entertainment.”
Brit Awards chairman Christian Tattersfield said “Britain led the world when it came to making great music. Part of this appeal is down to an incredibly diverse and vibrant music scene, with much of it coming from exciting new talent, but its foundation is undoubtedly built on a select group of artists that we now quite rightly revere as icons," he added. "Sir Elton is amongst the greatest of these living legends, inspiring generations of fans and other artists alike with his era-defining music, and there can be few more worthy recipients of this inaugural Brits Icon award.”
