| The Wedding DJ
|
I like playing at weddings; I'm a people-watcher and love the privileged position a DJ has at these family celebrations, especially when I've been booked to play background music from mid-afternoon.
It was about midday as I backed my small, ageing van up to the French windows of the Hipwood Manor reception rooms. The weather was perfect with gentle sunshine and blue skies with wispy white clouds arranged around the edges like expensive decorations. There was a more than gentle breeze but it was warm and the day just felt good. The storm of the night before had left a few hazardous puddles on the uneven gravel drive but the wind and sunshine would mop them up before the happy couple and their guests arrived at 2pm.
The hinges resisted and then protested with a metallic screech as I pushed back the rusted van doors and hooked them safely in position to prevent them slamming into me as I worked. It normally takes me just over an hour to set up on my own but today I'd allowed myself double that time, it was much better than sitting at home watching the clock and having to help out with the kids.
